Those used now in America in the 21st century are actually a combination of “Visiting Cards” (or calling cards) which first appeared in China in the 1400’s and “Trade Cards” which first appeared as a tool for commerce in Europe in the 1600’s.

Trade Cards were the first attempt at printed advertising since they often included the name of a company or store and a crude map showing how to get there since most streets didn’t have numbered addresses. There was no other means of contact than actually going to their location.

Times have changed.

Amid constant changes in technology, the role of business cards is ever expanding. They need to identify the company, the person named often with title, location, show the logo, contact information including multiple phone numbers, email address, web address, fax number, etc... Business cards now often transfer a huge amount of information about the person and company to any recipient.

Try this test.

Look at 4 to 5 business cards from individuals in the same line of work. Spread them out and pick which one appears to represent the most professional individual or most successful company. One will usually appear more striking and compelling than the rest. It actually makes that statement about the person who presented that card; professional and successful.
